The bustle and banter of London’s iconic Billingsgate fish market provided the backdrop for Reg Varney’s first sitcom following his phenomenal success in On the Buses.
In the mid-Seventies, Billingsgate was Europe’s premier fish market, its turnover running into the hundreds of tons: a muddle of boxes and barrows, merchants and white-smocked porters with their fish boxes perched precariously on their heads. East Ender Varney plays porter Reg Furnell, whose misadventures Down the ’Gate and beyond were charted over two series between 1975 and 1976; Dilys Laye stars as his long-suffering wife, Irene.
Although twelve episodes were made only seven now still exist and, for the first time, this set brings together all the remaining episodes of this lesser-known slice of Cockney humour.

If you enjoyed the hilarious antics of Stan Butler (Reg Varney) and his family or Jack Harper (Bob Grant) and the long-suffering Inspector Blake (Stephen Lewis), take a trip down memory lane and find out how many of the 1,000 questions you can answer in this exciting new quiz book. With sections on the iconic characters, actors, writers, directors, producers and locations, this book covers the whole 'On The Buses' journey from inception through to the three spin-off feature films and follow-on series Don’t Drink The Water.
This book is for anyone who remembers On The Buses and would like to find out more about one of the most popular sitcoms ever to appear on British TV.

On The Buses was a classic British situation comedy, created by Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney, which ran for seven series from 1969 to 1973, and introduced a host of much-loved memorable characters. The series followed the ups and downs of life on the buses as portrayed by two work shy-busmen, Stan Butler (played by Reg Varney) and his mate Jack Harper (Bob Grant) as they invented new scams to wind up their long suffering boss, inspector Cyril Blakey Blake (Stephen Lewis). This book tells the whole 'On The Buses' story from its inception through to the three spin-off feature films it spawned. It includes details of cast, crew, locations and the many famous faces and catch phrases which made-up one of the most popular sitcoms ever to appear on our TV screens. On The Buses aired in an era where entertainment was unrestrained by politically correct rules but hilarious scripts and quality acting guaranteed the series a legion of loyal fans around the globe. This book is a must have for anyone interested in learning more about On The Buses an example of British sitcom at its best.

THE ON THE BUSES FAN CLUB ARTIST IN RESIDENCE HERE AT THE DEPOT IS STEVE LILLY

Steve Lilly is an award winning artist from
Birmingham. His work is now becoming very collectable with many of his works in private collections. Adopting a flexible approach to subject matter has created a very varied portfolio containing everything from dogs and cats, horses, cars, book illustrations, buses, babies, Frankenstein’s Monster, Iggy Pop, Johnny Rotten, Kenneth Williams and even a shopping trolley and a chimp.
Steve’s art has received praise from figures within the comedy and horror industry with work being showcased by numerous groups and fan clubs as far away as New Zealand and America. The Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford recently agreed to an exclusive merchandising contract. The Laurel and Hardy Museum and official On The Buses fan club are stocking Steve’s merchandise. He also has strong links with the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society, Birmingham Comedy Festival, Hi, De, Hi Fanclub, Laurel and Hardy Saps At Sea Tent (Honorary Life Member) and numerous other comedy related groups. “I really strive to capture the expressions and mannerisms that are so characteristic of the people I am trying to portray. I’m not just looking for a likeness but an essence unique to each character that will bring them to life on the paper. I think I owe these fantastic actors something for all the fun and laughter they have brought to me over the years” Steve has over 19 years experience creating unique pieces of pencil rendered artwork. Every portrait is created with meticulous attention to detail and is built up over many hours by blending layers of finely laid graphite. The beauty of a graphite portrait lies in the depth of tone and contrast achievable by using varying grades of pencil and differing pressures of application. It is an ideal medium for expressing texture and detail.  Testimonies  “ I think your work is quite excellent. Congratulations”…..David Croft OBE (Dad’s Army co-creator) “ I think you will leave a legacy, these are stunning, really, really good”……Loyd Williams (Radio BBC WM) “Thank you again for sharing your wonderful work with me”…..Sara Karloff (Grand Daughter of Boris Karloff) “Each portrait is remarkable not only for the artistic skill involved, but also for how it manages to capture so perfectly the expressions and mannerisms which bring each character to life” …….Jacqui Gray (Journal)
